Flooring planning guide: area, allowance and whole cartons

Worked example: 12 × 15 ft room

Net area is 12 × 15 = 180 ft². Applying an illustrative 10% allowance once gives 198 ft². J+J Flooring’s current Alloy V5008 page lists 39 ft² per carton, so 198 ÷ 39 = 5.0769…, rounded up to 6 whole cartons.

• The exact metric room is 3.6576 × 4.572 m = 16.7225 m². The same 10% example gives 18.3948 m²; 39 ft² is 3.6232 m², so the result remains 6 cartons.
• The 10% allowance is an editable example, not a universal rule. Layout, pattern repeat, cut plan, damage and desired attic stock can justify a different documented input.
• Use the coverage printed for the selected product and package. The cited 39 ft² applies to Alloy V5008; do not transfer it to another product or carton.
• Measure closets, alcoves and excluded islands explicitly instead of burying missing geometry inside the allowance.

Area, then product, then companions

Start with the general flooring or product-specific laminate, vinyl, tile or carpet calculator. Enter the current package coverage and a chosen allowance, then keep grout, thinset, self-level, underlayment, transitions and cost on separate lines.

Round once, after coverage and allowance

Apply the chosen allowance to net area, divide by the selected package coverage, then round the purchase unit up once. Price the resulting whole-carton count with a current supplier rate; do not price only the unrounded area when cartons are the sale unit.

• Do not reuse one coverage figure across brands, products or package revisions.
• Confirm carton quantity, dye/lot requirements, transitions, adhesive and prep with the supplier or installer before ordering.
• Carpet roll direction, seams and pattern repeat still need an installer takeoff even after an area estimate exists.
