This calculator divides finished floor area plus a visible cut allowance by the coverage stated on the selected tile package.
Tile quantity uses the actual tile face and joint you typed, not a generic 10% bump hiding in area. Waste is a separate input so a 12×24 plank and a 2×2 mosaic do not share the same fudge factor.
Worked example. Example: a 12 ft × 10 ft floor is 120 ft². With 10% waste and 12 ft² per package, it rounds to 11 packages.

Field notes that change the number
- Measure net floor or wall after tubs, showers and openings you will not tile.
- Rectified large-format tile often wants a tighter joint and a higher waste on out-of-square rooms.
- Grout and thinset are companion takeoffs. Do not fold them into carton count.
Common mistakes
- Using room area without subtracting the shower pan or cabinet footprint you will not tile.
- Ordering cartons from coverage on the box without a waste line.
- Assuming herringbone uses the same waste as a straight stack.

Is 10% waste always enough?
No. Waste depends on layout, room geometry, tile size and pattern; confirm the allowance with the installer.
Does this calculate grout or trim?
No. Add grout, trims, adhesive and substrate preparation separately.
How many tiles for a 12x10 room?
A 12 × 10 ft floor at 12 ft² per box with 10% cut waste returns 11 packages. Grout and thinset are companion tools.
Should I add extra boxes for pattern?
Diagonal and herringbone need more than 10%. Put the extra in the waste field — do not hide it inside room length.
