Formula ID: LAND-SOD-001 · Version 1.0.0 · Published · Last reviewed Aug 26, 2026.

Inputs

  • Lawn length: Finished lawn length Default: 30.
  • Lawn width: Average finished lawn width Default: 20.
  • Roll coverage: Coverage of one supplier roll Default: 10.
  • Waste factor: Allowance for cuts, curves, beds, and walkways Default: 10.

How this calculator works

This calculator turns lawn area, supplier roll coverage and a visible cutting allowance into a whole-roll sod order.

  1. Measure the finished lawn area and split irregular areas into rectangles where practical.
  2. Enter the coverage printed by the local sod supplier for one roll or pallet unit.
  3. Apply a visible allowance for cuts around curves, beds and hardscape before ordering whole rolls.

Worked example: Example: a 30 ft × 20 ft lawn is 600 ft². With 10% waste and 10 ft² rolls, the calculation rounds up to 66 rolls.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Roll coverage must match the selected supplier product.
  • Waste is applied before whole-roll rounding.
  • Irregular lawn areas should be divided into simple measured sections before totaling.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confirm the measurement basis and units before using the result.
  • Keep waste or allowance visible and adjust it for the actual job conditions.
  • Confirm supplier packaging, delivery increments, specifications, and final site requirements before ordering.
