How this calculator works

A transparent asphalt calculator takeoff.

This calculator converts paved area and compacted thickness into cubic yards, then applies a stated mix density and visible placement allowance to estimate tons.

Worked example. Example: a 50 ft × 12 ft drive at 3 in compacted depth is 5.56 yd³. With 5% waste and 145 lb/ft³ density, the order rounds to 11.5 tons.
  1. 1. Measure the finished paved length and width.
  2. 2. Enter compacted thickness, not loose truck thickness.
  3. 3. Replace the default density with the mix design or supplier value when you have it.

Questions

Common questions about this asphalt calculator.

Is 145 lb/ft³ a guaranteed density?

No. It is a common hot-mix planning value. Actual density depends on the mix, compaction and temperature.

Does this include base or binder?

No. Subgrade, aggregate base and tack coat are separate quantities.
