Use landscape bed length, average width and compressed depth to estimate bulk mulch volume and whole-bag purchase needs.
Mulch is depth × area, then bags or bulk yards with the bag size you enter. Bulk deliveries settle; the waste line is the honest place for that, not a hidden extra inch of depth.
Worked example. Example: a 12 ft × 10 ft bed at 3 in depth contains about 1.11 yd³ of mulch. With 10% settling and edge allowance, the purchase quantity rounds to 1.3 yd³.

Field notes that change the number
- Measure the bed, not the whole yard. Trees and walkways you will not cover should be out.
- 2–3 in is a common landscape depth. Playground chips and erosion control are different products.
- A 2 ft³ bag is not a cubic yard. 13–14 of those bags make a loose yard before fluffing.
Common mistakes
- Ordering bulk yards from a photo without a depth.
- Forgetting that a second colour or a top-up next season is a new line.
- Using the same density for rubber mulch and hardwood chips.
