Use the selected roll dimensions and specified laps to estimate a conservative effective coverage. Add measured upstand/detail area and cutting waste before rounding up to whole rolls.
Measure roof surfaces and additional detail area.
Read roll size, laps and layer count from the specified membrane system.
Check a real roll layout before ordering; this area estimate is not a cutting plan.
Add your project costs

Costs use the square, bundle or panel rate you type. Construclytic does not fetch shingle or metal prices. Tear-off, dumpsters, starter and flashing stay separate estimate lines. For GCC projects, select QAR, AED, SAR, KWD, OMR or BHD and enter local supplier rates.
Use the selected roll dimensions and specified laps to estimate a conservative effective coverage. Add measured upstand/detail area and cutting waste before rounding up to whole rolls.
GCC-MEMBRANE-001 explicitly removes side and end laps from effective roll coverage. It then shows detail area, layer count and cutting allowance separately so a nominal ten-square-metre roll is never assumed to cover ten finished square metres.
Worked example. A 1 × 10 m roll with 100 mm side laps and 150 mm end laps has an estimated effective coverage of 0.9 × 9.85 = 8.865 m². For 100 m², one layer and 10% cutting allowance, order 13 rolls before project-specific adjustments.

Example result: Membrane rolls to order — 13 rolls.
rolls = ceil((roof area + detail area) × layers × (1 + waste/100) / ((roll width − side lap) × (roll length − end lap)))
Use the labelled units above when reproducing this example. To work in metric, switch the calculator to Metric; applicable measurements are converted, while product-specific units remain labelled.
1. Measure roof surfaces and additional detail area.
2. Read roll size, laps and layer count from the specified membrane system.
3. Check a real roll layout before ordering; this area estimate is not a cutting plan.
Field notes that change the number
Read laps and roll dimensions from the exact membrane data sheet; bitumen and facade membranes can differ.
Measure upstands, drain details and penetrations before adding cutting allowance.
Check a strip layout before buying because small roofs, staggered joints and offcut reuse differ from the repeated-roll model.
Common mistakes
Dividing finished area by the unadjusted roll area.
Counting a two-layer system as one layer.
Adding overlaps as a percentage after already subtracting them from roll coverage.
Overlapping strips consume material. The calculation deducts one side lap and one end lap per roll, a conservative repeating-roll estimate that does not recover exposed boundary edges.
Are 100 and 150 mm laps universal?
No. They are examples for a cited product. Replace them with the overlaps required by the actual system and substrate details.
What is the formula ID?
This waterproofing membrane calculator publishes formula GCC-MEMBRANE-001, version 1.0.0. The ID stays on the result and on the estimate line.
