Measure walls and ceilings separately
Use room length, width and ceiling height, then deduct doors and windows you will not paint. Ceilings, trim and doors are different surfaces and products. Benjamin Moore’s cited estimator describes its result as a rough estimate and excludes ceilings; this guide keeps that boundary visible.
- Use the coverage from the selected can, not a universal 350 ft²/gallon assumption without checking the label.
- Count coats explicitly. The guide does not assume that a second coat uses an undocumented fraction of the first.
- Textured, porous, repaired or high-contrast surfaces can change actual coverage; enter a product- and job-specific rate openly.
Room, wall, ceiling, then cost
Use the interior paint calculator for a full room, wall paint when only walls change, ceiling paint for overhead area, primer for a separate primer coat, exterior paint for elevations, trim paint for linear enamel, and paint cost only after the material quantity exists.
Worked example: 16 × 12 ft room, 8 ft high
- Gross wall area: 2 × (16 + 12) × 8 = 448 ft². This is wall area, not floor area.
- Deduct one measured 20 ft² door and one measured 15 ft² window: 448 − 35 = 413 ft² of paintable wall.
- Apply two finish coats once: 413 × 2 = 826 ft² of stated coverage demand.
- Using 375 ft² per US gallon only as the visitor-entered product-label example: 826 ÷ 375 = 2.2027…, rounded up to 3 whole gallons.
The 375 ft² rate is an example input, not a universal entitlement or manufacturer promise. The result excludes the ceiling and primer, and it remains a planning estimate until surface condition, selected product and available container sizes are confirmed.

Whole gallons and primer as separate lines
Round the calculated finish-paint quantity up to available labelled containers. Keep primer, ceilings, trim, accent colours and different products on separate order lines because their coverage and packaging may differ.
- Do not hide labour hours inside the gallon price if you need a transparent quote.
- Confirm sheen, base, colour and container sizes with the supplier before treating the result as an order.
- Sample pots and partial leftovers do not automatically use the same reliable coverage as a new full container.

These tools estimate quantity. They do not specify surface preparation, moisture control, lead-safe work, colour matching, application method, drying conditions or labour production.
