Lumber & framing calculator
Wall stud calculator
Preliminary wall-stud count from wall run, spacing, openings and a visible allowance.
Calculator result and formula
Studs to plan: 14 studs
Formula: (floor(wall run ÷ spacing) + 1 + 2 per opening) × (1 + waste)
Formula ID: LUM-STUD-001 · Version 1.0.0 · Published · Last reviewed Aug 26, 2026.
Inputs
- Wall length: Finished wall run before framing details Default: 12.
- Stud spacing: On-center spacing; confirm project framing requirements Default: 16.
- Framed openings: Door/window openings needing a preliminary pair allowance Default: 1.
- Waste factor: Allowance for cuts, defects and project complexity Default: 10.
How this calculator works
This preliminary calculator divides a wall run by stated on-center spacing, adds end studs and a visible opening allowance, then applies purchase waste.
- Measure the wall run and enter the specified on-center spacing.
- Enter openings only as a preliminary allowance; detailed headers, corners and intersections need plan review.
- Use the result as a planning input and verify the framing plan, grade and local requirements.
Worked example: Example: a 12 ft wall at 16 in on-center has 10 baseline studs. One opening adds a preliminary two-stud allowance; with 10% waste, the total rounds to 14 studs.
Assumptions and limitations
- Baseline count is floor(wall run ÷ stated spacing) + 1 for end studs.
- Each opening receives a visible preliminary two-stud allowance only; detailed headers, corners, intersections and cripples need a plan takeoff.
- The three-plate run assumes one bottom and two top plates when applicable; confirm the framing design.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confirm the measurement basis and units before using the result.
- Keep waste or allowance visible and adjust it for the actual job conditions.
- Confirm supplier packaging, delivery increments, specifications, and final site requirements before ordering.
