This calculator turns a measured framing width and stated on-center spacing into a preliminary joist count and total linear footage.
LUM-JOIST-001 counts joists from the framing run, span and stated spacing, then total linear footage. It does not pick a species, depth or a span table. Rim joists and blocking stay extras.
Worked example. Example: a 20 ft framing run at 16 in spacing requires 16 baseline joists. At a 12 ft preliminary run plus 10% allowance, the tool shows 16 joists and 211.2 linear feet to plan.

Field notes that change the number
- Spacing is on-center. A 12 in kitchen floor is not a 16 in bedroom.
- Span is the clear or the design span you were given — this tool does not choose it.
- Stairs openings are extra trimmer joists.
Common mistakes
- Using wall-stud spacing on a floor.
- Hiding rim and blocking inside the joist count.
- Calling this a span-table approval.
