Hip roof calculator publishes formula ROOF-HIP-001 version 1.0.0. Hip roof calculator for pitched area, squares and hip run from footprint, pitch and overhang. Waste, rounding and the rate you type stay on the sheet so a quote letter can still explain the number. Add the line to an estimate. Planning takeoff only — not a code approval and not a live supplier price.

  1. Formula ROOF-HIP-001 version 1.0.0 is the arithmetic on this hip roof calculator page and on the quote letter.
  2. Roofing takeoff: Hip-roof area, squares and hip run from footprint, pitch and overhang. Gable shingles stay the roofing calculator. Waste and purchase rounding stay visible inputs, not hidden constants.
  3. Add the hip roof calculator result to an estimate, then send a quote letter — an old letter still explains itself.
  4. You type the unit rate. Construclytic does not fetch supplier prices for this roofing tool.
  5. Planning takeoff only. The hip roof calculator is not a code approval, mix design, or PE stamp.

Transparent cost view

No dummy crew rates. Totals stay at zero until you type a material or labour rate. Pick a currency — badges, inputs, and totals follow.

Costs use the square, bundle or panel rate you type. Construclytic does not fetch shingle or metal prices. Tear-off, dumpsters, starter and flashing stay separate estimate lines. Qatar and GCC planning: switch the currency control to QAR, AED, SAR, KWD, OMR or BHD. Construclytic does not publish a live Gulf plant or labour index. Plant, block and crew rates in Doha, Dubai and Riyadh vary by plant and season — replace every number with a local quote.

How this calculator works

A transparent hip roof takeoff.

Footprint including overhangs, times the pitch factor √(1+(rise/12)²), times waste, divided by 100 for squares. Hip run uses four 45° hips on a rectangle.

ROOF-HIP-001 is a rectangular hip: footprint plus overhangs, times the pitch factor, into squares, plus four 45° hip runs. Gable shingles stay the roofing calculator. Wings and valleys are extra lengths, not a hidden second pitch.

Worked example. Example: a 40 × 30 ft plan with 1 ft overhangs at 6:12 and 12% waste rounds to 17 squares, with hip run shown beside the squares.
  1. 1. Add overhang to both plan dimensions. Hip roofs still have eaves on all four sides.
  2. 2. Pitch factor is the same geometry as the gable roofing calculator.
  3. 3. Ridge cap and hip-and-ridge bundles stay the ridge-cap tool.

Field notes that change the number

  • Add overhang to both plan dimensions. Hip roofs still have eaves on all four sides.
  • Pitch factor is the same geometry as the gable roofing calculator.
  • Ridge-cap bundles stay the ridge-cap tool. Valley metal on a wing is a flashing line.

Common mistakes

  • Using the gable roofing page on a hip and missing hip run.
  • Forgetting overhangs, then inflating waste to guess them.
  • Calling this a rafter design or a PE stamp.

Questions

Questions about hip roof

Why not the roofing calculator?

That page is a gable footprint. This page adds overhangs on a hip and reports hip run.

Valleys?

A hip roof may still have valleys at wings. Add those lengths on the flashing or ridge-cap line.

What is the formula ID?

This hip roof calculator publishes formula ROOF-HIP-001, version 1.0.0. The ID stays on the result and on the estimate line.

Is this engineering advice?

No. The hip roof calculator is a planning takeoff. Construclytic is not a registered engineering or contracting firm. Field checks, codes and product data still sit with you.

Does Construclytic fetch live supplier prices?

No. Costs on the hip roof calculator use the rate you enter. Construclytic does not fetch live supplier prices.
