Floor tile coverage and whole-package quantity with a visible cut allowance.

Calculator result and formula

Formula: L × W × (1 + waste) ÷ stated coverage

Formula ID: FLOOR-TILE-001 · Version 1.0.0.

Inputs

  • Floor length: Finished tiled floor length Default: 12.
  • Floor width: Finished tiled floor width Default: 10.
  • Package coverage: Coverage stated on the selected tile package Default: 12.
  • Waste factor: Allowance for cuts, pattern and breakage Default: 10.

How this calculator works

This calculator divides finished floor area plus a visible cut allowance by the coverage stated on the selected tile package.

  1. Measure finished floor length and width.
  2. Use the coverage printed on the selected tile package.
  3. Increase allowance for diagonal layouts, complex cuts or extra repair stock.

Worked example: Example: a 12 ft × 10 ft floor is 120 ft². With 10% waste and 12 ft² per package, it rounds to 11 packages.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Coverage should use the selected manufacturer's product label or quoted net coverage.
  • Waste is added before whole-unit purchase rounding.
  • Complex layouts, seams or patterns can require a higher documented allowance.

Common questions

Is 10% waste always enough?
No. Waste depends on layout, room geometry, tile size and pattern; confirm the allowance with the installer.
Does this calculate grout or trim?
No. Add grout, trims, adhesive and substrate preparation separately.
