Lumber & framing calculator
Plywood & sheet goods calculator
Whole sheet-goods quantity from rectangular coverage, selected sheet coverage and allowance.
Calculator result and formula
Sheets to order: 11 sheets
Formula: Coverage length × width × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet coverage
Formula ID: LUM-SHEET-001 · Version 1.0.0.
Inputs
- Coverage length: Finished rectangular coverage length Default: 20.
- Coverage width: Finished rectangular coverage width Default: 16.
- Sheet coverage: Coverage of one selected sheet Default: 32.
- Waste factor: Allowance for cuts, openings and layout Default: 10.
How this calculator works
This calculator divides a rectangular coverage area plus a visible allowance by the selected sheet's actual coverage and rounds to whole sheets.
- Measure the rectangular coverage area.
- Enter the selected sheet's usable coverage.
- Increase allowance for openings, layout, seams and cut complexity.
Worked example: Example: a 20 ft × 16 ft area is 320 ft². With 10% waste and 32 ft² sheets, the purchase quantity rounds to 11 sheets.
Assumptions and limitations
- Coverage area is rectangular; complex geometry should be divided into measured sections.
- Sheet coverage must match the selected product.
- Waste is applied before whole-sheet rounding.
Common questions
- Does this determine sheathing thickness?
- No. Sheathing type, thickness, fastening and structural requirements need independent verification.
- Does it optimise layout?
- No. It estimates quantity only; cut sequencing and edge support require a detailed plan.
