Formula ID: FLOOR-PACK-001 · Version 1.0.0.

Inputs

  • Room length: Finished floor length Default: 18.
  • Room width: Finished floor width Default: 14.
  • Package coverage: Coverage per box/package Default: 20.
  • Waste factor: Allowance for cuts and pattern matching Default: 10.

How this calculator works

Flooring package quantity is calculated from room area, product-label package coverage, and an explicit cut or pattern waste allowance.

  1. Measure finished room length and width.
  2. Enter the coverage printed on the actual product package.
  3. Increase waste for diagonal layouts, patterns, off-square rooms, or future repair stock.

Worked example: Example: an 18 ft × 14 ft room is 252 ft². With 10% waste and 20 ft² per package, the calculation rounds to the next whole package.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Coverage should use the selected manufacturer's product label or quoted net coverage.
  • Waste is added before whole-unit purchase rounding.
  • Complex layouts, seams or patterns can require a higher documented allowance.

Common questions

Should I use net or gross room area?
Begin with finished floor area, then decide whether permanent islands, closets, and other exclusions need adjustment.
Why round packages?
Flooring is normally purchased by whole boxes or packages, not partial coverage.
