How this calculator works
Flooring package quantity is calculated from room area, product-label package coverage, and an explicit cut or pattern waste allowance.
- Measure finished room length and width.
- Enter the coverage printed on the actual product package.
- Increase waste for diagonal layouts, patterns, off-square rooms, or future repair stock.
Worked example: Example: an 18 ft × 14 ft room is 252 ft². With 10% waste and 20 ft² per package, the calculation rounds to the next whole package.
Assumptions and limitations
- Coverage should use the selected manufacturer's product label or quoted net coverage.
- Waste is added before whole-unit purchase rounding.
- Complex layouts, seams or patterns can require a higher documented allowance.
Common questions
- Should I use net or gross room area?
- Begin with finished floor area, then decide whether permanent islands, closets, and other exclusions need adjustment.
- Why round packages?
- Flooring is normally purchased by whole boxes or packages, not partial coverage.
