Painting & drywall calculator
Drywall material calculator
Room drywall sheets, fasteners, compound and tape with visible opening deductions and purchase rounding.
Calculator result and formula
Drywall sheets to order: 15 sheets
Formula: (wall area + optional ceiling − openings) ÷ sheet coverage × (1 + waste)
Formula ID: DRYWALL-ROOM-002 · Version 2.0.0.
Inputs
- Room length: Longest finished room dimension Default: 12.
- Room width: Shortest finished room dimension Default: 10.
- Ceiling height: Finished floor-to-ceiling height Default: 8.
- Doors: Standard door openings to deduct Default: 1.
- Windows: Standard window openings to deduct Default: 1.
- Door deduction: Editable area deducted per door Default: 21.
- Window deduction: Editable area deducted per window Default: 15.
- Include ceiling drywall: Adds ceiling area to the material takeoff Default: 1.
- Sheet size: Select the drywall panel coverage Default: 32.
- Waste factor: Allowance for cuts, seams and handling Default: 10.
How this calculator works
This calculator converts room walls and an optional ceiling into whole drywall sheets, then shows transparent screw, joint compound and tape planning quantities.
- Measure room length, width and finished ceiling height.
- Confirm or edit standard door/window deductions and whether ceiling board is included.
- Select 4 × 8 or 4 × 12 sheet coverage and use the purchase quantity as a planning baseline.
Worked example: Example: a 12 ft × 10 ft × 8 ft room with one standard door, one standard window and ceiling drywall has 436 ft² of net area. At 32 ft² per sheet plus 10% waste, it rounds to 15 sheets.
Assumptions and limitations
- Gross wall area uses 2 × (room length + room width) × ceiling height; ceiling is optional.
- Door and window deductions are editable planning assumptions.
- Companion-material estimates use 0.053 gal/ft² compound, 1.5 linear ft/ft² tape, 3.5 screws/ft² walls and 4 screws/ft² ceilings; confirm the selected system and installation method.
- Waste is applied only to whole-sheet purchase quantity.
Common questions
- Why show mathematical and purchase sheets separately?
- Drywall is purchased as whole panels. The mathematical quantity stays visible so the waste and rounding effect is transparent.
- Are fasteners and joint compound included?
- Yes, as visible planning estimates based on stated rates; confirm board system, fastening schedule and finish requirements before ordering.
